The UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre(formerly Academic Staff College) was established in 1987 under the Academic Staff Orientation Scheme of University Grants Commission. It was one of the MMTTC established in the introductory phase of Academic Staff Orientation Scheme. Since inception in 1987 the MMTTC of Savitribai Phule Pune University is considered one of the top performing MMTTC in the country. While acquiring this status in terms of number of programmes covered and number of participants benefited the UGC-MMTTC of SPPU has also developed its reputation for quality of the programmes and the way the programmes are conducted.

Apart from the sincere and serious efforts for designing and organizing the programmes the MMTTC of SPPU has always remained a trained setup due to its continuous innovation and creativity.

The UGC-MMTTC, SPPU so far has conducted 531 Refresher courses (covering 17795 teacher participants) 175 orientation programs (covering 6571 teacher participants), 17 Special Summer/Winter Schools (covering 964 teacher participants), 22 Faculty Development Programmes (covering 786 teacher participants), 14 Professional Development progrmmes (covering 380 participants), 2 Ph.D. Post Doctoral programmes (covering 52 participants) and 11 Principal/Academic Administrators Workshops (covering 454 participants) .

Equipped with the state of the art infrastructure the UGC-MMTTC in 2018 was recognized as Faculty Development Centre by the MHRD under PMMMNMTT through which in 2018-2019 the Faculty Development Centre has conducted 30 Faculty Development Programmes (covering 989 participants), 4 Refresher Courses (covering 265 participants) and 4 Workshops (covering 113 participants).
